Exceptional Children's Teacher Maria Moxley » Home

My name is Maria Moxley, and I have been a Yadkin County resident my entire life. This is my 30th year of teaching.  I taught 20 years at East Bend Elementary (where I taught sixth grade and exceptional children), and am currently in my 10th year at SMS as an exceptional children's teacher.  I graduated from Appalachian State University in 1988 and 2009 for my undergraduate and Master's Degree.  I live on a farm where my husband, Gary, works, and I am blessed with two sons, Grant and Garrett.  I enjoy gardening, cooking, baking, reading, playing with my two dogs Diezel and Moon Pie, my Grand-dog Daisy, and Grand-kitty Trigger, and helping out with my church youth group at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church.  I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends at the beach and New River.  I love to swim, go tubing, and kayaking.
What I do:
I work with 7th and 8th grade students who benefit from specially designed instruction in various academic, social, and/or behavioral targeted areas of need.  I co-teach with Angela Love in a 7th and 8th grade math class, providing individualized, small group, and/or whole group instruction.  I also provide individualized and small group specialized instruction in my classroom in the area of math to those students who have math goals in his/her IEP.
Student Expectations:
I want my students to know that my goals are to help them achieve and grow to their fullest potential, to discover strengths, to overcome obstacles, to develop confidence in themselves and his/her abilities, and to never give up on tasks, skills, and/or concepts they deem impossible to conquer.  I expect my students to ask questions when they don't understand, to persevere through even challenging problems, and to come to school prepared to learn each day, bringing with them a positive attitude, needed materials (including assigned homework), and an "I CAN DO THIS" mindset.  I also expect students to be respectful, responsible, and accountable for his/her learning.
First Quarter Focus in my Math Co-Teaching Classes:
7th grade- Our year will begin with the ratio and proportion strand (rates, unit rates, etc.). We will also be working with the number system strand (Absolute value, opposites, and much work with positive and negative numbers).  We will also target IEP goals and objectives as well.
8th grade- We will start the first quarter with transformations which most students like. After several items in the geometry strand of study, we will finish this quarter with equations. We will also target individual IEP goals and objectives as well.
